Your art workshop vacation at Casa de los Artistas is different
from anything you have experienced, (read the statements of past Casa
participants online). Aside from the wonderful instruction in art and
photogrphy there will be numerous cultural excursions as well:

• We will visit the exotic botanical gardens for photography and sketching

• Visit the Mt. town of El Tuito, tour the small but beautiful plaza and
local bakery, having lunch and tequila tasting at a wonderful hacienda
restaurant overlooking the mountains and the Aguave plantation,
(perhaps tour the distillary).

• We will also be taking a trip into Puerto Vallarta for shopping at the
Mercado and wonderful crafts shops, walking on the malecon (boardwalk), at night (filled with artists, street performers and revelers) and tour some of the galleries to experience the city’s lively arts scene.

• There will be a boat trip to explore the gorgeous coastline and
spectacular rock formations, as well as to swim or snorkel at Los Arcos
National Coral Reef Park, with opportunities for seeing sea turtles,
whales, dolphins and abundant fish.

Other wild life is right at hand, from the balcony of your room you can
view tropical birds and observe the local unspoiled Boca.  Watch (and
participate) as the simple authentic Mexican village life unfolds around
you. This quaint fishing village unspoiled by tourists, is a rare treat off the
beaten path. Words don’t actually do justice to the wonderful adventure in
store for each participant. Your all inclusive week long Art
Workshop/Vacation is just that - a workshop that is structured so you
don't have to worry about details, but not too rigid - loose enough to enjoy
yourself, relax and experience a vacation from the typical.

About the Instructor: Over the years, Kitchell has seen his wanderings as
image and “soul” collecting trips. Prints, photos and paintings that arise from
these fragments of borrowed cultural “soul” are clearly a continuation of
the modernist’s appropriation from primal sources. It is often said that
Picasso borrowed heavily from tribal sculpture in French West Africa.
Peter makes no bones about his sources. He started wandering in the 60’s
through ancient mud cities of Saharan Africa, then went on to
Stave Churches in the remoter parts of Scandinavia, Mayan temples
in the dry heat of the Yucatan and Incan artist’s stonework in
the high Andes.

Early on, painting in watercolor was a way of communicating with the
locals while also distilling the experience of these exotic places.
More recently the wanderings have ranged from early gothic skeletal
ruins in Tuscany to a trip covering some of the remoter parts of Japan.

Rare Book 3, Watercolor, Digital Collage - Peter Kitchell

The sometimes very large pieces he is commissioned to do now are a
digital combination of landscape details from his wanderings and
many layers of scanned painting, interwoven by an eye that doesn’t
differentiate between abstract and realism. Drawing from the traditions of
western painting, Japanese sumi-e and the possibilities of modern digital
media, Kitchell’s current work is an exploration of the texture of place.
The reworked multiple generations of these inspired images become more
and more abstract, become his own language, and possibly,
his own version of “soul”, with a desire to close a creative circle
hundreds, or maybe thousands, of years old.
