Watercolor Workshop With Renown Artist & Instructor
Sterling Edwards

Sterling Edwards, "Blaze of Glory"

"As a visual artist, I am constantly stimulated by the never ending variety of shapes and colors that surround us.
It’s not enough just to replicate what I see but rather to interpret. Combining form with color relationships and
bold values, I feel compelled to express my thoughts and emotions with strong, and often stylized, shapes. What
I feel about the subject draws me to the brush. I have painted the monumental to the insignificant, each with
equal passion. It all begins with an idea and a burning passion to create and express. That is the true artist.
Everything else is merely technique." - Sterling Edwards

Sterling Edwards is a native of Kansas City, Missouri and has lived in North Carolina since 1973. Having started
painting at age twelve, he has evolved into an artist whose style of painting has been described as “mature” by
galleries and collectors of his work. This was not always the case however. He spent years learning ways of mixing
colors, establishing perspective, handling light and dark, and practicing various brushstrokes. This resulted in a tight and
photorealistic style of painting with oils that proved relatively successful but left Sterling feeling unfulfilled as an artist.

Sterling Edwards - "Back Street Assisi"

Sterling’s decision in 1987 to take a five-day watercolor workshop with Zoltan Szabo, an artist whose work Sterling
admired opened more doors for change.   Szabo’s loose and expressive style of watercolor painting was a pleasant but
challenging change from the tight and photographic style of painting that Sterling was accustomed to. Szabo taught him
how to paint with large brushes focusing most of the energy of the painting in the larger shapes while minimizing the
detail. Learning to paint with a two- inch brush was a giant leap from the two-bristle brushes that he
was accustomed to using.
“I never realized the importance of focusing on the larger shapes in a painting. In most landscapes 75% to 85% of the
painting is made up of large shapes such as the sky. I had always been so constrained by the tiny details that I had
never even seen the large shapes. Instead I would paint them as a collage of interlocking smaller shapes using small
brushes. Suddenly a sky was more than just backdrop, it was a shape in and of itself that could be manipulated and
made interesting as an integral part of the overall design of the painting. A large brush permitted me to paint a sky
with five or six brush strokes instead of five or six hundred. What freedom!”

Sterling Edwards - "Oregon Morning"

Sterling Edwards - "Waterfront"

Working with large brushes enabled Sterling to be more expressive and spontaneous. For the next sixteen years he
studied with Szabo until Szabo’s untimely death in 2003. They had become good friends during this time and Szabo
instilled in Sterling the confidence and encouragement that he needed to become a full-time professional artist.
Sterling was becoming well known throughout the U.S. and Canada as an interpretive and abstract watercolorist. In
2008 Sterling was awarded a signature membership in the prestigious Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, an
international organization based in Toronto that recognizes artists who have excelled in the use of transparent
watercolors. That same year he was invited to be a member of the Rusty Nail Painters, an international invitational
group of professional artists that meet every other year for a week of plein air painting, exchanging ideas, and in-depth discussions on art. To facilitate his style of painting, Sterling designed his own unique signature watercolor palette and signature set of ten watercolor brushes that are marketed internationally. That same year Sterling was awarded a book
contract with F&W Publishing Company to write a North Light Book about his style of painting transparent watercolor
landscapes. The North Light book, “Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, A Four Step Process” and a library
of instructional DVDs that he has produced have attributed to his international reputation as a watercolor master and
instructor. In 2009 Sterling was selected by Kennedy Publishing Company as a featured artist in the book, “Best of
America Watermedia, Volume II
” released in 2010. In May, 2010 Sterling was awarded a signature
membership in the revered Transparent Watercolor Society of America and featured in an article in the June, 2010 issue of
Watercolor Artist Magazine.

Peter Kitchell was born in 1950 in Cambridge, MA to architect/ artist parents. He was encouraged to paint at a
very young age and began his formal training at the Modern Art and DeYoung Museums in San Francisco at
the age of five.
While continuing his education at San Francisco Art Institute and California College of Arts and
Crafts, Peter and his friends built a light show company which played the Fillmore and the Avalon Ballrooms,
accompanying groups from the 'Righteous Brothers' to 'Big Brother and the Holding Company'.

In the late 60's, with traditional structure falling apart in American and European colleges, Peter set out looking
for primal culture. It was winter and he headed for North Africa, arriving in Morocco and crossing into Algeria,
then traveling down through Niger, across the Sahara to the Savannah and Gold Coast. A year later, sick and
very thin, he headed back up through the Western Sahara and on to Portugal. As a daily ritual he drew or
painted the people and landscape. Language being a problem, these drawings and paintings were often his only
means of communication. He lived among the Berber tribes, with devout Moslems and ancient matriarchal
societies, all the while painting the pieces that would become part of his first solo show back in the Bay Area in
the beginning of the 70's.

Sailing to the Sun
Peter Kitchell, "Anza Borego", watercollor collage

Through the 70's he was making a living designing and building furniture. As well, he continued his tradition of
photographing, painting and drawing from the landscape, often going to the desert in the southwest for months
at a time. This led to his second solo show in San Francisco and his first commission from the Mark Hopkins hotel.

By the 80's, Peter's work with a TV news special on and shows in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Houston and
San Francisco, his career had finally reached full swing. At this time his art consisted mostly of large sweeping
watercolors and watercolor collage and printmaking abstracted from the landscape.

Sailing to the Sun
Peter Kitchell, Photograph

In 1985 he left the Bay area for the forests of New England. Unruly nature became his new inspiration.
Interpreting this denser landscape, he assembled an ambitious diarama over a hundred feet in length installed in
its own room at the Springfield, MA. Museum of Fine Art.

Peter had started experimenting with lithography and etching at the Art Institute in San Francisco in the late
60's, moving on to papermaking and monotypes in the early 80's at Magnolia Press, also in the Bay Area.
Moving into the 90's he continuing traditional print making using established printers on both coast, as he developed and evolved digital printmaking in his Buckland, MA. studio. These first digital prints had an abstract
subject matter. The original source being large shaped metallic paintings he had recently finished.
This new digital form of image working was greatly helped by the previous 30 years experience in
more traditional forms of printmaking.

Sailing to the Sun
Peter Kitchell, "Sweeping Moods" digital collage

In the early 90's, Peter joined with local arts activists to found Partnership for the Arts in Western Massachusetts
and the Artbank, an educational and performance facility. This led to a grant sponsoring Peter in a lecture series,
"Twice Seen".
The idea of the lecture being, that his many media and the visions they illuminate, were all
perceived with the same inner eye. Whether through a lens or a brush his vision organized the world in the same
way. Comparing photographs and abstract paintings from very different times and places over a twenty-year
period, the similarities, as one might expect, were astonishing. This project evolved into a book you can see on
his website. The process of assembling random parts into images became more organic. This eventually led to a
process of assembling images into collages that form the main body of his current work.

kitchell
Peter Kitchell, photograph
Over recent years he has been comissioned to produce a number of his large scale digital collage murals for
corporate complexes, as well as the health care and hospitality industries.
These, sometimes very large pieces, are
a digital combination of landscape details from his wanderings and many layers of scanned painting, interwoven
by an eye that doesn’t differentiate between abstract and realism. Drawing from the traditions of western
painting, Japanese sumi-e and the possibilities of modern digital media, Kitchell’s current work is an exploration
of the texture of place
.

Peter continues to paint background
textures in the studio to collage in with the photography. Traveling he continues to paint outdoors in watercolor.
Thirty years of wandering have taken him through ancient mud cities of Saharan Africa, to Pagan churches in
the remoter parts off Scandinavia, or to farms high on the volcanoes of Central America and Mayan temples in
the dry heat of the Yucatan. More recently there have been extended trips to ruins in Tuscany, and the temples of
central India and Japan. We are happy to welcome Peter back again to the Casa in Boca de Tomatlan to share his talents and artistic vision.

Robert Masla is an internationally exhibited artist whose work is in numerous discerning private and
corporate collections. He has an extensive exhibition history extending over 30 years of solo and
group shows. Masla works in a variety of styles and media in the expression of what he calls Spiritrealism.
Painting in oils, alkyd, acrylic and watercolor, he is best known for his powerful and bold work,
where he extracts from the “apparent, mundane visions” that surround us and are often taken for granted, the
innate spirituality of the local. Through the use of color, light and various applications of paint,
his work expresses a heightened sense of the transcendental, revealing, as one art critic stated,
...”the energy of the life force, the light that is internal, or spiritual, as well as visual.”
Always exploring creativity in search of truth and beauty he examines the
perennial questions that confront our human condition.
In recent years Masla has combined traditional painting techniques with the use of
digital images and manipulation to create his very unique Digital Collage Paintings.
An exhibition spanning several years of this creative journey was held at the

A Week of Creativity and Celebration
with

Dr. Gina Ogden

Gina in tub
Gina Ogden, PhD, LMFT

“Ginas’ workshop was masterful and excellent! As a guest from
Sweden I think my stay here was worth the long way I had to go to get here.
Leaving will not be so easy.”
- Tina Nevin, Sweden, participant in Gina's 2010 Casa Workshop

“Gina's work is the missing link to empowerment.
She presents a do-able theory and real ways to apply it. She offers a rebirthing of
the self that really works. It's simple, it's alive, it's available today without 2,000 years
of therapy. She is simply amazing!” -Participant, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health

Dr. Gina Ogden is a family therapist, sex therapist, longtime student of ceremonial
shamanism, and author of The Heart and Soul of Sex, Women Who Love Sex, and
The Return of Desire. Her pioneering survey on sexuality and spirituality (ISIS) provides
scientific foundation for her transformational workshops and retreats. Gina’s work has
fans all over the world, including cultural historian Riane Eisler, holistic physician
Christiane Northrup, and couples expert Esther Perel. She has keynoted scientific
conferences and appeared on media shows from talk radio to Oprah.

"Introduction to Sculpting Materials and Techniques"
with Award Winning Wildlife Sculpture
Rip Caswell
and Drawing with Bob Masla

Rip sculpting in clay for the cast bronze monument
"Guardian Spirit"

Join renowned wildlife sculptor Rip Caswell for a unique
week of incredible learning and fun at Casa de los Artistas.

Last time Rip taught at the Casa they had just birthed a few Black Jaguars and Bengal Tigers. We had the
incredibly rare opportunity to go in the pen with the babies, hold them, play with them, photograph them up
close and measure them. We then went back to the Casa Studio and with Rips' expert and gentle guidance we
all produced wonderful Jaguar sculptures.

Challenge Accepted
Rip with baby Jaguar at Puerto Vallarta Zoo, Mismolya, (one village over from the Boca)

Rip Caswell specializes in nature inspired wildlife and figurative bronze sculpture and is renown for his
ability to capture the spirit and essence of his subjects.
Popular with private and corporate collectors worldwide. He has created more than
200 sculptures of various subjects in contemporary and realistic styles.

An authority in wildlife art, Caswell's collectibles are credited to his deep understanding of living creatures –
human and animal – in their natural environment. His sculptures have a life and breath of their own.

Caswell often serves as a judge in competitions and presents at seminars. Many art galleries, publications and
television broadcasts also have featured his works.

The son of a professional guide and outfitter, Rip Caswell moved to the Northwest when he was just six years
old. Everything about art attracted the young boy. His professional career has evolved as he mastered
distinctly different art forms.

Clay sculptures: When his family lived in Northwest Washington for a time, he sculpted animals from the
water-based clay of the shores of the Pend Oreille River.

Taxidermy: Rip’s father saw his son’s talent and encouraged the boy to study taxidermy. For several summers
Rip understudied with accomplished taxidermist, Bill Lancaster of Beavercreek, Oregon. In 1985, Lancaster
offered Rip a full time job and the two teamed to become lead contenders in Northwest taxidermy.

In 1988, the duo’s entries swept the Northwest Regional Taxidermy competition by winning all bird and
mammal categories. The competition had 96 entries and the Lancaster/Caswell team took every award at the
event. Caswell repeated this effort on his own in 1989, again winning every award.

In 1990, Caswell decided to compete at the national level, planning eight months in advance. He chose to
combine contemporary sculpture and traditional taxidermy. Those concepts were applied to his work on a
green-winged teal, which took top honors.

Bronze: Inspired by the prestigious win at Nationals, Caswell’s friends suggested that he cast images in bronze.
The Caswell Gallery opened in Troutdale, Oregon in December 1992, located next to a foundry.
Recent commissions include the larger-than-life-sized sculpture of former Oregon Governor Tom McCall and
an Iraq War Memorial in Madras, Oregon, as well as the installation of "The Battle" – two life-size elk – at the
High Desert Museum near Bend, Oregon.

Join artist Robert Masla for a week of creative rejuvenation, exploration and fun. Treat yourself to an
incredible week of inspiration that will nourish your body, mind and soul.
Making art and relaxing at the unique Casa de los Artistas, words do not do justice to
the wonderful adventure that awaits each participant.

An exhibition spanning several years of this creative journey was held at the
Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, July through October, 2009

Masla's teaching experience is extensive, having taught drawing, painting (all media),
2 and 3D design, printmaking, art history, art education as well as lecturing on art as healing/therapy,
art making as a spiritual practice and conducting workshops in accessing creativity.
He has worked with a variety of age groups and environments from pre -k through college, as well as

Masla has also published articles, a catalogue and authored the book,

Massachusetts Cultural Council for his excellence and dedication to arts education.
Masla, along with his wife, Monica Levine, created Casa De Los Artistas as a retreat for their family and to
conduct workshops for fostering and nurturing creativity, self-discovery and the passion for life.
